Botanical garden & butterfly park
The most beautiful butterfly park in the world
Quindio is an exceptional place for the contemplation of nature, and that was the reason for creating a Mariposarium, butterfly museum, to reveal the close relacioin between plants and these marvelous insects. The idea of building the park was expressed by its founder, Alberto Gomez Mejia, in 1991 to the famous conservationist Miriam Rothschild, in London. This is one of the most visited ecological sites of Quindio, recognized for its exceptional botanical garden, that represents almost all the varieties of exotic species of vegetation and flora of the region. The winding path of the park's diverse forest habitats takes us through a laberynth that leads us to a bird sanctuary that harbours a hidden looking-glass dome, to then take us to the inmense greenhouse facility of the mariposarium to delight us in being able to precence the spectacular process of metaforphosis of these amazingly varied and colorfull insects. The tour lasts half a day and includes a tipical Arriero lunch at a popular native restaurant in the picturesque town of Calarca.
